Abstract: Music-to-color association is an interesting mechanism in which listening to music automatically and involuntarily leads to the conscious experience of color. The hand-knotted Persian rug, a subgroup of Oriental rugs specifically woven in Iran (Persia), is one of the oldest surviving art crafts. One of the characteristics of Persian rug is rich-hued harmony of the color and design which is uniquely linked with the indigenous culture and specific to an identifiable geographic area or nomadic trib. However, to our knowledge, the relationship between music color and rug has not been studied. This research therefore examines how the organization of the sounds in a musical piece is expressed in color design of Persian rug. Considering both colors and image composition, we will discuss timber in system-mapping relation between musical pieces and color images to propose a synesthetic lan- guage of aural-visual transformation and its relationship in Persian rugs for the first time.
